World Masters Athletics The Club is a member of the world veteran athletics governing body, World Masters Athletics (formerly WAVA) and Bill Purves is our enthusiastic WMA representative and co-ordinator. Contact Bill (shtb @ i-cable.com) for details of veterans' track & field and road competitions throughout Asia.
The world veterans championships will be held in Finland from 28th July to 8th August. This is a 10-day track meet with all the usual track and field events, 3 racewalks, a cross country and a marathon. You can find full details at: http://english.wma2009.org/
All events are held in 5-year age groups starting at 35. You can see the results of the previous meet for your age group at: http://www.dbwma2007.org/results/atwma/2007/riccione0409200701/at/indexframe.htm
Just click on your age group, and then the event you're interested in. As you'll see, it's tough to win a medal, but most HK runners won't be lagging behind. Of course, in addition to the meet there will be sightseeing in Scandanavia. There is midnight sun in July, and many people race in the cross country on the first day, spend 8 days touring, then come back for the marathon on the last day. If you rent a car, you can drive to the arctic circle. Or you can easily visit St. Petersburg, Stockholm and Estonia by ferry. Entries don't close until late May, but if we want to get apartments where we can live an eat together, we need to apply early. So Bill is making up a list of "definite maybes". You can of course make your own travel arrangements but you do need to enter the meet through AVOHK.
If you would like to be on his list for more information, please reply to his email address or contact us.
